On Wednesday, September 28th, Smithtown residents celebrating birthdays ranging from 90 years to 102 enjoyed a very memorable lunch in honor of their years enriching the community, family and friends. The 90th birthday celebration is an annual catered lunch and ceremony held at the Smithtown Senior Center, which has become a favorite among the staff and members. The annual birthday celebration is open to residents who are members of the Smithtown Senior Center.
“I am so grateful for Doreen Perrino and her incredible team for the good work they do at the Senior Center each day. I believe we should honor our eldest members of the community, giving each individual the respect and adoration they so deserve… That is why I love this event, witnessing the thought and detail our team at the Senior Center devotes to delivering so many cherished memories. On behalf of the Town of Smithtown, I’d like to formally wish all of our residents who are celebrating these milestone birthdays a very blessed, healthy and happy year ahead.” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim
With over 60 Smithtown Seniors celebrating turning 90 years and upward in person, Carmela Cassara, Margaret Holthusen, and Sarah Perillo had one-hundred candles to blow out. Janet DeVries surpassed a century on earth, celebrating 101 years with family and friends. And finally, the showstopper in the room was the lovely Mrs. Frances Miller, who celebrated her 102nd birthday, looking about thirty years younger. These young ladies shared their secrets to living well, which included laughing often, celebrating the little moments, and always getting dolled up to go anywhere in public.
“This is by far my most favorite event of the year. My team and I adore every one of our incredible members, like we would our own family. So naturally this was a very special occasion for us. We plan for months to make sure it’s perfect… and thanks to this phenomenal team at the Smithtown Senior Center, we delivered a spectacular event which our seniors and their family members will be talking about until we blow out the candles next year.” - Doreen Perrino, Smithtown Senior Citizens Department Program Director
The birthday celebration was catered by Andersons in Kings Park. Specialty mock-tails were served, a choice of meatloaf, stuffed flounder, or roast chicken for the main course and angel food cake with fresh raspberries and cream was served for dessert. All dietary restrictions were taken into account prior to serving lunch.
