[ARCHIVED] Smithtown Disposes of Hazardous Household Waste

Hazardous Household Waste

Town of Smithtown Collects Over 8 Tons of Waste from 320 Homes

The Town of Smithtown Department of Environment and Waterways collected over 8 tons of waste at the Hazardous Household Waste event this weekend. On Saturday, October 1st, 320 Smithtown households participated in safely disposing of 17,480 pounds of toxic items, which are prohibited in regular curbside waste pickups.

“I am grateful for our Department of Environment and Waterways, Municipal Services Facility, Department of Public Safety, and their leadership, who help make these important events happen in a smooth and seamless manner each year. I would especially like to thank our town residents, who safely dispose of household toxins while making a conscious effort to be environmentally friendly consumers.” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim

Smithtown Municipal Services Facility employees worked in conjunction with the Department of Environment and Waterways Environmental Director David Barnes, Solid Waste Coordinator Mike Engelmann, Public Safety Fire Marshals, and DEW staff to safely secure materials despite the stormy weather. The exact weight collected was 8.74 tons (scale house net) in hazardous materials.

“It is always a pleasure to provide this service for our residents. We have hundreds of households participating in every event we hold, and this helps make a positive impact on our local environment. We are looking forward to more successful waste disposal events in 2023.” - Mike Engelmann, Solid Waste Coordinator

Materials were collected and manifested for disposal by Radiac Research Corp. In addition to residents dropping off hazardous household waste, many circled their vehicles around to pick up bags of free mulch on the way out.

A portion of the wastes collected for manifested disposal include: waste oil based paints/ flammable paints, gasoline, paint thinners, waste gases, petroleum distillates, flammable solids, oxidizers liquids and solids, sodium/potassium nitrates, acids, corrosives, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, misc. toxic liquids (i.e. Chlordane, etc.) and solids, lacquers, lithium batteries, battery acids and various other toxic compounds.

Covanta provided $5 Home Depot gift cards to approximately 50 residents for recycling potentially harmful batteries, propane tanks and mercury containing devices thereby preventing these harmful items from curbside disposal.

There will be three Hazardous Household collection events in 2023. Dates will be announced in the 2023 Refuse & Recycling Collection Calendar. These events are for Smithtown Township residents only. Proof of residency will be strictly enforced.
