9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

Smithtown Families, First Responders, Military & Veterans Gather for September 11th Remembrance Ceremony

On Sunday, September 11th, 2022, the Town of Smithtown, in conjunction with the Smithtown Chamber of Commerce, hosted local families of 9/11 victims, First Responders, U.S. Military and Veterans in a special September 11th Remembrance Ceremony. Rabbi Mendel Teldon of Chabad of Commack and Pastor Stephen Zarlengo of Smithtown Tabernacle Church led Elected Officials, First Responders and community members in an interfaith reflection and blessing.

Today We stand united, to honor the memory of our loved ones, our brave first responders and our men & women in uniform who protect us against terrorism. We pay respects to our friends and neighbors who grieve their loss. Today we reclaim the spirit of unity, hope, faith and resilience that served as a light through our darkest of hours, twenty one years ago today… To all who have lost loved ones on September 11th, and in the years that followed, I will make you this one promise. We will always honor you and your loved ones here in Smithtown, each and every day. Through acts of service, or the random act of kindness. That is how we keep their memories alive. That is how we Never Forget.” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim

The names of the 53 Smithtown Residents who were killed 21 years ago during the 9/11 attacks were read, followed by a moment of silence and ceremonial wreath laying by representatives of the US Marines, Veterans and 9/11 First Responders. The ceremony closed with a rendition of Proud to be an American by John Zollo, as the Smithtown Chamber of Commerce's Barbara Franco handed out roses to be placed along the memorial fountain.
