[ARCHIVED] Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween Safety

We all look forward to the smiling faces of young trick-or-treaters every Halloween. This year, during the coronavirus pandemic, the holiday might look a bit different. The Town of Smithtown has put together a few quick tips, so you and your family can safely enjoy Halloween this Saturday.

For Households:

Set up an outdoor station or use the trunk of a car as opposed to handing out candy face to face. If you have kids, involve them in decorating the station as a family fun Halloween activity. Add a safety sign on the station that reads: one at a time please.

Wash or sanitize hands before and after handling candy. If you are individually wrapping candy ahead of time, wear gloves and face mask to avoid unnecessary contact.

For Families:

Stay Local on Halloween with little ones

Trick or Treat around the neighborhood

Have fun planning safe activities or plan to participate in a virtual costume or pumpkin carving contests

Plan on going to a family-friendly Drive in Movie

For Trick or Treaters:

Give your kids some basic ground rules

Remember to socially distance with those who don't live in your home

Stay in the neighborhood

Avoid teaming up in a big group

Avoid sharing props, touching candy, doors and other surfaces

Utilize hand sanitizer frequently or incorporate gloves into a costume

Don’t all reach into a candy bowl at the same time

Consider using a Halloween-themed cloth mask

Talk with your kids before heading out.

Note: Face masks under actual halloween masks can make breathing difficult. Costume masks are not considered a replacement for surgical masks or cloth face coverings.

Have Fun and Stay Safe!
