Smithtown Holds Largest Shred Event to Date

Shred

More than Sixteen Tons of Personal Documents Successfully Shredded in Smithtown’s Largest Event Yet

On Saturday, September 26th, over 440 households dropped by the Town of Smithtown Municipal Services Facility to safely shred over sixteen tons of sensitive documents. The turnout was three times the normal volume at the bi-annual shredding event, held courtesy of the Smithtown Department of Environment and Waterways, Municipal Services Facility, and the Department of Public Safety.

“This service has grown more and more popular with each event. So much in fact, that we’ve had to relocate from Town Hall to MSF to accommodate the sheer volume of residents safely disposing of sensitive documents. This year’s event was especially different, as we required residents to remain in their vehicles and wear masks while our teams safely removed documents from cars, armed with personal protective equipment for their own safety… in warm weather no less! We all desperately need a sense of normalcy right now. And thanks to the combined leadership and the employees at MSF, DEW, Public Safety, our Solid Waste Coordinator and Sanitation team, we securely shredded more than 16 tons of paper.” -  Supervisor Ed Wehrheim

A steady stream of residents arrived at MSF throughout the day, observing strict COVID-19 safety guidelines, to dispose of personal documents which were then safely destroyed.

In 2019, over 500 households came down to safely shred sensitive documents in the Summer and Fall. Prior to the September 2020 event, the September 2019 event was the largest to date, with over 12,580 pounds, or 6.3 tons, of paper safely shredded by Data Shredding Service, Inc using the “Shreddersaurus.” The April 2020 shred event was canceled due to the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I want to personally thank the hard working team that provides this clearly invaluable service to both the residents and our environment. Every time we host a shred event, the turnout surpasses the previous one. I believe services such as this one and the men and women who devote their weekends to orchestrating them are a part of what makes Smithtown such a desirable community to call home.” - Councilman Tom McCarthy

The September event took place at the Municipal Services Facility located at 85 Old Northport Road in Kings Park from 9:00AM through 3:00PM. All personal documents were safely destroyed by Data Shredding Service, Inc., a full-service confidential shredding service located on Corporate Drive in Hauppauge.
