Property Tax Relief

Suffolk County Authorizes Extended Deadline on Property Tax Payments for Residents Economically Impacted by the Coronavirus

Suffolk County sent its recommendation for a 45 day extension on property tax deadlines to Albany last week. The deadline, under Governor Cuomo’s was amended extend to all residents to June 22nd. Residential, rental and commercial owners who have endured financial hardship due to the coronavirus pandemic will be able to pay late without penalty for an additional three weeks. The relief deadline comes after a five week dialogue with Suffolk County’s Municipal Finance Working Group, of which Supervisor Ed Wehrheim is a member.

“This was no simple task. It involved a great deal of cooperation at every level of government; beginning with County Executive Bellone coordinating with Congressman Zeldin to qualify for the Municipal Liquidity Facility federal assistance. The unwavering collaboration between Congressman Zeldin, Senator Schumer, Congressman Suozzi, Congresswoman Rice and Senator Gillibrand, provided Suffolk County with the provisions to make this a reality. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Suffolk County Comptroller Kennedy and his team who worked relentlessly to find a feasible path to financial relief. Also, the Suffolk County Supervisors Association, our Village Mayors, School Superintendents, and Fire Districts have been a driving force in advocating for property tax relief at every step of the way. This doesn’t happen without all of us, all-embracing, bit-by-bit, united for the betterment of our communities. It’s been an honor to be a part of this effort.” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim

The property tax extension is available to all residents and businesses who have experienced a financial hardship due to the coronavirus pandemic. Any property tax payments made on or after June 1st, 2020 should be made directly through Suffolk County.
