[ARCHIVED] Smithtown Pets of the Week

Mia and Hokey Pokey

Mia and Hokey Pokey

Meet the Smithtown Animal Shelter’s Pets of the Week; Mia and Hokey Pokey.

Mia is a young Female Mastiff and Lab mix who came to the shelter as a stray after being hit by a car. Fortunately, Mia’s injuries were not severe, with only a few scrapes and minor fractures in her foot. Mia’s former owner could no longer provide for her, post car accident. Despite being scared and injured, she began to bond with the shelter staff with her playful and affectionate personality shining through the bruises and bumps.

In her former life, Mia was an outdoor yard dog who didn’t receive much attention. The silver lining is just how grateful she is to love and be cuddled by everyone she meets. Mia would be best in a home without other pets or children.

Hokey Pokey is a four month-old Male Domestic Shorthair Mix kitty. This resilient little guy was born to a stray cat in December, and he was born with a deformed rear leg and tail. Hope for his survival was not high, as kittens born with deformities often have difficulty thriving. However, Hokey Pokey stayed strong, and he has shown what living life to the fullest means. This little fighter plays, snuggles, and behaves each day like he will not be defined by his disabilities, and who are we to argue?

Hokey Pokey will need to have his deformed leg amputated when he is old enough, and he will likely never have control over urination/defecation behavior but his spirit and grit is absolutely unbreakable. Hokey Pokey can live with any dogs, cats, or children, he just needs a home that will give him the love and special care that he needs to live a long and happy life.

Currently, there are a variety of male and female cats & kittens available to adopt or foster. If you are looking for a fun loving, yarn tossing ball of love, stop by the Kitten Nursery or the Cat Condos at the Smithtown Animal Shelter and find a PURR-fect soulmate or two!

All of the felines at the Shelter are current on vaccines and have received a full workup (blood work, Feline HIV & Leukemia tested, physical exam etc.) by a board certified Veterinarian.

If you are interested in meeting Mia or Hokey Pokey, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with them in a domestic setting, which includes our Meet and Greet Room, the dog runs, and our Dog Walk trail. Family Pet Meet and Greets and at home interactions are also welcome and an integral part of the adoption process.

COVID-19: Foster Opportunity:

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, our Animal Shelter has had to restrict public access, including our loyal volunteers. If you have no other pets or young children at home, and are looking for a way to serve your community in this time of crisis, please consider signing up to be a foster. Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens, and dogs in their own homes. Some animals need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for extended periods of time.

Download the Foster Application at:

Spay/Neuter Clinic:

The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation will hold a Low Cost Spay/Neuter Mobile Clinic at the Smithtown Animal Shelter on April 8th & 22nd. To book appointments, please call (631)-566-8870.

Thinking About Adoption:

The Smithtown Animal Shelter’s primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to us. The Animal Control Officers and Kennel Attendants at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another.

Residents who have other pets can arrange to bring your four-legged family member to the shelter or set up an at home meet & greet to see how your prospective family member does with other family, pets and the household itself. Please allow yourself an hour minimum to meet with your potential new family member.

Hours at the Smithtown Animal Shelter are currently Monday - Friday 8AM - 4:30PM and Saturday 8AM - 3:30PM. (Sunday’s: by appointment only). During the COVID-19 pandemic, public access is restricted to confirmed adoption appointments and wildlife/domestic animal rescue only)

To inquire about the Pet of the Week or to meet your potential soulmate, please call the Smithtown Animal Shelter at 631-360-7575.
