[ARCHIVED] Take the Smithtown Social Pledge

SocialPledge

Local Youth and Parents are invited to take the Smithtown Social Pledge to promote and exhibit kindness online and in person

Local students and parents are encouraged to take the Smithtown Social pledge in an effort to promote healthy online habits awebSocialnd fight bullying by leading by example. The pledge is one of many activities taking place in conjunction with Smithtown’s official Mental Health Awareness Month.

“Now more than ever, we have the tools, research and education to foster a better understanding of mental health. Our emotions can become easier to interpret, understand and are not as overwhelming, when we start the conversation with one another.” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim

The “SMITHTOWN” social pledge is an acronym which defines healthy practices for individuals of all ages. The pledge reminds participants to speak up if someone is being bullied, to exhibit positivity online and in person, and only posts photos and information about others if that individual has granted permissions to do so. The Smithtown Social Pledge is intended to encourage residents to be ambassadors of kindness online and in person.

“My hope is that children will engage with their parents in this activity together. We see so much divisiveness on the news, TV and on the internet everyday. But if we as a community aspire to be kinder to our peers, family and neighbors, maybe that decency will spread to the next town.. and the next one and so on.” - Councilwoman Lynne Nowick
