[ARCHIVED] 2019 Veteran’s Day Events

Veteran's Day

Veteran’s Day is Monday, November 11th, 2019. Join your local community in honor of all those who have served, at one of the many Veteran’s Day events happening in the Town of Smithtown. For more information on each of these events, visit the Community Calendar on the Town of Smithtown website.

St. James:

Hosted by VFW Post 395, the St. James Veteran’s Day Parade will begin at 10:00AM at the intersection of Lake Avenue and Woodlawn Avenue. The Parade runs along Lake Avenue to St. James Elementary. A Veteran’s Day Ceremony will begin immediately after the parade at St. James Elementary School.

Kings Park:

The Kings Park VFW Post 5796 will host the annual Veteran’s Day Parade starting at 10:00AM at RJO Intermediate School on Old Dock Road.  The parade route continues up to Main Street and ends at Veterans Park, (across from the Kings Park Fire Department, next to the Kings Park Library) on the corner of Church Street and Main Street. After the parade, head to the VFW (40 Church Street) to enjoy a hotdog and say Thank You to our Veterans.

Smithtown:

Smithtown American Legion Post 833 and Smithtown VFW Post 10870 will hold a Veteran’s Day Ceremony at 10:45AM at the Veterans Plaza located on Main Street in Smithtown. (In case of inclement weather, the ceremony moves to Post 833 at 51 Juniper Avenue.)

Watch at Home:

Catch Supervisor Ed Wehrheim on Fox and Friends this Monday morning as he discusses his time in the service. Supervisor Wehrheim served two tours in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. He will be joined by decorated Vietnam War Veteran, and St. James resident, Hon. Jack Toomey. The regular broadcast time airs between 6AM-9AM on Monday.

Honoring All Who Serve:

The Town will begin its production of a Smithtown Veterans documentary, interviewing service members from World War II, all the way up to modern day conflicts. Filming for the documentary is slated to begin on November 19th.

Other ways to support veterans in the community:

  • Veterans groups like the American Legion, VFW, and American Legion Riders are currently seeking new members to join the ranks.

  • Donate gently used clothing to the United Veterans Beacon House

  • Get involved in local Veteran based foundations, such as Heros for our Heroes, Boots on the Ground, Vietnam Vets of America.

  • Thank a Veteran every chance you get!
