[ARCHIVED] Supervisor's Report

Supervisor's Report

A HAMLET-TO-HAMLET WEEKLY SUMMARY OF WHAT’S HAPPENING AROUND SMITHTOWN

After an excellent response from our Residents, we’re pleased to present this Town Update on a hamlet-to-hamlet basis each week. In addition to numerous projects underway, our public input survey for the Comprehensive Master Plan will be open until Labor Day. I would encourage every resident to take the online survey via Publicinput.com/Smithtown. Also, on Saturday August 17th, please come down and Support the Smithtown Animal Shelter as we participate in the Clear the Shelters Day. All Adoption Fees have been waived in honor of the initiative.

KINGS PARK:

I’m happy to announce that our Parks Department has begun the revival of Russ Savatt Park (Savatt Square). The planting beds have been landscaped with colorful flowers and shrubs, and have added new flowers in giant whiskey barrels. In a few weeks, they will begin to replace the old wood benches.

Our Parks Department has also installed a new slide at Flynn Memorial Park’s playground area.

Coming Up in Kings Park:

Our Youth Bureau is participating in a great initiative; Protecting the Coastline Bluffs, with Commack-Kings Park Rotary Club. The first of many events will be a family Color Walk/Run on October 19th. Registration to help protect our Bluffs is now open via the Commack-Kings Park Rotary Club Website.

SAN REMO:

In San Remo, the Parks Department will begin replacing old equipment on the playground at San Remo Community Park. The work is estimated to take a week and should not compromise any time spent enjoying the space with family.

HAUPPAUGE:

The Traffic Safety and Highway Departments are about to start a project at the L.I. Innovation Park at Hauppauge. This will include the widening of New Highway from one lane to two thru lanes. Adams Avenue will also be widened to create dual left turn lanes. The Traffic Safety Department is replacing 32 year old wooden traffic signals with modern and less cluttered mast arm signals. This is a much needed project in a heavily traveled area that will offer safer roads for bicyclists, runners, and pedestrians, in addition to motor vehicle traffic.

The Parks Department has also made some repairs to the surface at Pine Cone Woods Park. Plans are to install brand new surfacing at this park in the upcoming fiscal year.

NESCONSET:

Thanks to a call from a concerned resident, we dispatched our Parks team to Browns Road Park to evaluate the playground surface. Our department Director, Joe Arico, was able to arrange for the vendor to make the needed repairs at no cost to the town.  We anticipate brand new playground surfacing to be completed in 2020. Additionally, the new slide at Charles Toner Park is scheduled to be installed in four weeks.

The Highway Department has finished concrete work along Gibbs Pond Road, and anticipates that Gibbs Pond Road milling and paving will begin the second week of September. This week, curb and sidewalk replacements will begin along Terry Road.

SAINT JAMES:

The Parks Department is in the process of finishing up some improvements to the St. James Gazebo. The roof and trim is being bird proofed, in addition to new signage and some landscape clean up work.

The Highway Department is also out working on drainage replacement along Lake Avenue. They will begin paving south of Woodlawn in the coming weeks.
