Community members, families, and
professionals will have an opportunity to attend a free workshop provided by renowned
neuroscientist Dr. Stephen L. Dewey on Monday, September 9, 2019 at 6:30PM. The
event will be held at Smithtown Landing Country Club in the Nissequogue Room.
Light refreshments will be served. There will also be an opportunity to dispose
of expired medications during a Medicine Take Back Event with the help of Town
of Smithtown Public Safety, and a Narcan Training provided by Well Life
Network.
Highlights of the presentation
include: empowering parents with the knowledge and confidence to guide their
children through their adolescent and teen years; Discussion on a range of
drugs including caffeine (energy drinks), alcohol, nicotine, marijuana,
cocaine, ‘spice,’ ecstasy, opiates, and methamphetamine; Learning how the environment causes relapse
to drug-seeking behavior; a discussion on the science behind vaping and report on recent clinical findings following both acute and long-term use; and the
examination of cell phone use and video gaming (specifically Fortnite and
Minecraft) on dopamine concentrations in the brain.
This event is a collaborative effort between Horizons
Counseling & Education Center, Well Life Network, and the Smithtown Rotary. The Rotary Club of
Smithtown presented a $5,000 charitable donation to the two agencies. The
monies will also go towards providing transportation to services and promotion
of educational material. The Town of Smithtown Youth Bureau will also
participate by engaging the Town’s registered Volunteer Corps student members
and their families in this important community education event.
