Smithtown App Connects Residents with Public Safety Information

The Town of Smithtown releases a new mobile app designed to give residents up-to-the minute updates and local news faster than ever before. This free app (available on the Apple App Store and Google Play) provides a mobile-friendly way to browse the Town of Smithtown website and access to emergency resources that many residents have requested. Prior to January 2018, numerous residents shared their input to Supervisor Ed Wehrheim asking for a faster, more effective outlet for them to learn more about what was happening within the town, from road closures and paving information, to weather alerts and storm preparation.

“This is a tremendous step in the transparency process and we’re so lucky to have the talent in house to develop an App that would normally be a very costly process to design. I am extremely grateful for our Public Safety Communications department for taking the initiative and I am excited to hear from the residents after using this App.” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim

Upon opening the app, users can use the main menu, which has a number of options for all Town issues. Menu navigation features include the Town of Smithtown Facebook page, department websites, and Smithtown GTV programming, where residents can watch recent Town Meetings and Town programming with ease. Crucially, the app connects users with a variety of resources that are helpful in the event of emergencies. Users can sign up for the New York Red Alert SMS, view Department of Transportation information for local traffic, and fill out referrals to National Grid, the Red Cross, or PSE&G.

“This started as an idea that John Gonzales (communications technician) offered to develop for the Town using his own skill set. I am so impressed with the finished product and I just hope the community feels the same way.” - Chief John Valentine, Department of Public Safety

The Town of Smithtown app is a recent initiative, designed by Public Safety communications technician, John Gonzales at no expense to the taxpayer. The idea was inspired in response to resident requests for improved sources for obtaining Town-related news and information.

The “Town of Smithtown” app is available for free download on the iPhone App Store and Google Play store.  To download simply search “Town of Smithtown” in the App Store of your choosing and click GET.
