FULL AND PART TIME EMPLOYMENT
The Town of Smithtown provides opportunities for full employment in the public sector and service to Smithtown residents. Positions are classified by the New York State Department of Civil Services as "competitive", "non-competitive", "labor", or "exempt" class. Civil Service positions are classified on the basis of difficulty, level of responsibility and qualifications.
Competitive full time positions require applicants to take a Civil Service examination for a specific title. The Suffolk County Department of Civil Service administers these exams for Suffolk County jurisdictions including most towns, villages, libraries and school districts. The Suffolk County Department of Civil Service is located at:
725 Veterans Memorial Highway
North County Complex, Bldg. #158
Hauppauge, NY 11788
A list of titles as well as a current listing of competitive exam dates and filing deadlines may be obtained by contacting the Suffolk County Civil Service Department (631) 853-5500 or visiting Suffolk County.
Exams are usually administered on Saturday at various locations. A variety of test techniques are used, but multiple choice is most common with 70-110 questions and with the average length of the test being 3 hours.
All other positions are filled directly through the Personnel Department. Applications are kept on file for one year.
Open positions and applications are also available at the following location and on the Job Opportunities page.
