LWRP Update
For over 25 years the LWRP has served as a guide for the Town of Smithtown in establishing objectives, programs, and standards to promote the beneficial use of coastal resources and avoid impairment of these resources. However, over the years many changes have occurred in understanding coastal issues and management, in government laws and programs addressing coastal management, and in the conditions and circumstances affecting Smithtown's coastal resources and uses. In response to these changes the Town is updating and rewriting its LWRP.

The process will include updating and re-structuring the existing plan to reflect four themes: the developed coast, the natural coast, the public coast, and the working coast. The LWRP will also identify federal and State actions necessary to advance the Town’s program.  Draft sections of the LWRP will be posted to this webpage as they are completed.

Community Input
On Wednesday February 24th the Town of Smithtown held the first of several public workshops to obtain input from the public on the development of its revised LWRP. Over 40 participants including members of civic organizations, policymakers, residents and business owners in the waterfront area attended the workshop.

The workshop began with a presentation by the Town’s consultant, Charles McCaffrey, who discussed the history of the LWRP, the reasons for updating the LWRP, issues that will be addressed, and what has been completed so far.  A full description of the presentation can be found here. After the presentation, participants broke into four groups to discuss their visions for the waterfront area and develop a list of recommendations to incorporate into the LWRP.  Click here to view a list of the groups recommendations.

In addition to the workshops, comments can be submitted at any time via mail to the Planning Department, 99 West Main Street, Smithtown, NY  11787 or by emailing the Planning Department.
