Peddlers Permits
Getting a Peddler's Permit
Any person, whether a resident or not, that is selling goods for sale either by foot, vehicle, or any other type of conveyance must first obtain a license from the Town Clerk’s Office.

Finger Print Investigation
A fingerprint investigation is required prior to a permit being issued. To initiate the fingerprint investigation the applicant must first make an appointment with the Public Safety Department at (631) 360-7553. The cost of the investigation is $140 and can be made by check or money order payable to:  The Town of Smithtown.

Other Requirements
Applicant must bring to the Public Safety Department the following information:
  • Copy of Alien Registration Card if not a citizen
  • Copy of New York sales tax number
  • Driver’s license
  • List of items being sold
  • Seven (7) photographs (2 inches by 2 inches) showing the head and shoulders of the applicant
  • Vehicle registration (if applying for a vehicle permit)
  • Vendors who make intermittent stops in residential areas must produce a copy of their vendor certificate from Suffolk County proving that they completed the Suffolk County vendor law training program

Once the investigation is complete the applicant will be notified via phone call to pick up the license from the Town Clerk’s Office.

  • Fee for each vehicle $125
  • Peddlers license: $50
